Accessibility Statement
YAIP should be usable by everyone, including people who use a screen reader, need subtitles or a different audio track, or control their TV only with the remote. This page explains what works today and what does not yet.
Last updated: 25 October 2026
1. What this statement covers
This statement covers the YAIP apps for Samsung Smart TVs (Tizen), LG Smart TVs (webOS) and the YAIP web app at app.yaip.duckdns.org, version 1.0.0. The apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Android are not yet covered; we will add them once they have been reviewed.
YAIP is a player. The channels, films and series, and whether they come with subtitles or audio description, are provided by the TV service you subscribe to. YAIP shows every subtitle and audio track that service includes, but cannot add tracks that are missing.
2. Compliance status
We assess YAIP against the European standard EN 301 549 V3.2.1, which includes the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, as required by the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) and the German Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG).
The covered apps meet most of these requirements. The exceptions we know about are listed under Known limitations, and we are working on them.
3. On every platform
- Subtitles and audio tracks. The player has Subtitles and Audio buttons next to play and pause. They list every subtitle and audio track in the stream, including audio-description tracks your provider supplies. Your choice is remembered for each profile and, with YAIP Sync, on your other devices.
- Remote or keyboard only. Everything works with the arrow keys, OK or Enter, and Back or Escape. Dialogs and menus always close with Back, and focus returns to where you were.
- Visible focus. The selected control turns white or gets a white outline, so you can always see where you are.
- Readable text. Text meets the WCAG contrast ratios against YAIP's dark background.
- Screen reader labels. Every button, including the icon-only player buttons, has a name. Screen readers also hear whether an item is selected, switched on or unavailable.
- Spoken updates. Changes that appear without you moving are read out: playing, paused, the position after skipping, reconnecting, errors, and empty search results.
- No flashing. Nothing in YAIP's own screens flashes. The only motion is a loading spinner.
4. Samsung TVs
- Voice Guide. With Voice Guide on (Settings > General & Privacy > Accessibility > Voice Guide Settings), YAIP is built so the TV reads each item as you move to it: its name, its type and its state.
- Player controls stay on screen while Voice Guide is on, instead of hiding after five seconds. Press Back to hide them.
- Your TV's subtitle settings. If the TV's Subtitle or Caption setting is on, subtitles start on until you choose otherwise in YAIP. Subtitle size, text colour, background colour and background opacity follow the TV's Caption Settings.
5. LG TVs
- Audio Guidance. YAIP supports LG's Audio Guidance (Settings > Accessibility > Audio Guidance) and is built so the TV reads each item as you move to it.
- Player controls stay on screen while Audio Guidance is on, where the TV reports the setting to apps.
- Subtitles are drawn by the TV's own player.
6. The web app
- Screen readers. YAIP uses standard buttons, form fields, headings and landmarks, and is built with screen readers such as NVDA, VoiceOver and TalkBack in mind.
- Zoom and small screens. The layout adapts from phones to large monitors, and browser zoom and pinch-to-zoom are never blocked.
- Player keyboard shortcuts: Space or K to play and pause, J and L or the left and right arrows to skip 10 seconds, the up and down arrows for volume, M to mute, C for subtitles and F for full screen.
- Subtitles are drawn by your browser, so they follow your operating system's caption style settings.
7. Known limitations
- Testing with screen readers is still in progress. We have built YAIP to work with Samsung Voice Guide, LG Audio Guidance and desktop and mobile screen readers, but have not yet tested every TV model and browser. If something is not read out, or is read out wrongly, please tell us which TV or browser and which screen you were on.
- On the TV apps, the selected category in the library sidebar is shown only by colour. Screen readers announce it as selected.
- The TVs' own High Contrast and menu text size settings are not applied inside the TV apps yet.
- Subtitles are not read aloud by the screen reader.
- Audio-description tracks are listed by language but not marked as audio description, because the streams do not reliably say which tracks they are.
- On Samsung TVs, the subtitle font, edge style and window colour from the TV's Caption Settings are not applied yet. On LG TVs, the subtitle style depends on the TV.
- The border of an empty text field is faint. Each field has a visible label above it.
8. How we checked
This statement is based on a self-assessment completed on 17 October 2026. We reviewed the apps against EN 301 549 and WCAG 2.1 AA, measured colour contrast, and tested remote, keyboard and screen reader behaviour in development builds. We will update this page when the limitations above are fixed or new versions are released.
9. Feedback and contact
If you find a barrier in YAIP, or need information from this page in another format, use the contact form (topic “Accessibility”). We usually reply within two working days.
10. Enforcement
If our reply does not resolve your concern, you can contact the authority that oversees the accessibility of products and services in Germany: the Marktüberwachungsstelle der Länder für die Barrierefreiheit von Produkten und Dienstleistungen (MLBF) in Magdeburg.
